A new round of training for the Master Watershed Steward program will be held virtually, starting in March 2021. Montgomery County Master Watershed Stewards have volunteered support to numerous projects including bank pinning, grant writing, implementation of stormwater management programs, tree planting in riparian buffers and communities, building rain gardens, supporting municipal MS4 regulations, citizen scientists for our creeks, volunteering to support local environmental organizations and educating the public. To become a Master Watershed Steward, you must complete 40 hours of training and fulfill 50 hours of volunteer service within the first year. After becoming certified, you maintain your status by giving at least 20 volunteer hours and attending at least 10 hours of continuing education annually. Although requirements vary from region to region, academy students must attend weekly classes for about 5 months to earn their master watershed steward certification.
To obtain the title of “New York Master Watershed Steward,” participation in a training workshop and a watershed -based apprenticeship project are required. As part of the training program, experts will cover relevant topics including: watershed planning, floodplain management, best management practices to address watershed problems, stakeholder engagement, and much more.
